Your diet can impact your immune system: What should you be eating to stay healthy?

WACO, TX — Staying as healthy as possible is more important now than ever.

One way you can do that is by eating nutritious food.

Nutritionists say continuing to eat enriched nutrients will help strengthen your immune system, therefore keeping you healthy.

"Nutrition is always important but now more than ever nutrition is a game changer," said Stacey Chmiel.

Heather Finley and Stacey Chmiel are licensed nutritionists who say amid COVID-19, there are still ways to eat healthy food.

"Like oranges or anything yellow, that is going to be great for immunity and red food like bell peppers and strawberries. Frozen is a great substitute and you will get as much nutrition with frozen as you would fresh," said Dr. Heather Finley.

According to them, it's all about implementing fruits and vegetables on a day to day basis.

They say right now it's not about boosting your immunity, but instead maintaining it.

"Right now we have to be careful about the phrase boosting your immune system - we do not want to overstimulate it, we want to maintain it," said Chmiel.

"Having time with your family, sleeping and doing the things you live can be better for your immune system than anything you can eat because you are letting your body rest," said Finley.

If you do not want to leave your home as often, there are other options.

Some local businesses are delivering those goods to your doorstep.
