The Texas Department of Transportation will close the southbound side of Interstate 35 between Business 77 and 18th Street at 7 p.m. on Jan. 7.
The main lane traffic shift to the northbound side of the interstate is to prepare for the demolition and reconstruction of two overpasses and the Brazos River bridge.
The southbound exits for BUS 77/Elm Avenue (Exit 337) and for University Parks Drive (Exit 335B) will be closed while traffic is in this configuration.
To access BUS 77, drivers will need to exit at US 84/Waco Dr. (Exit 338A). To access University Parks Drive, 4th/5th Streets, and Downtown, drivers will need to exit at MLK Boulevard (Exit 335C).
Crews will begin the reconstruction by removing the I-35 southbound main lanes that cross over MLK Boulevard, followed by University Parks Drive, then BUS 77, and finally the Brazos River.
Each removal is anticipated to take two days and will include closures of all east and westbound lanes that cross under I-35 at the removal location.
TxDOT says two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction, and this configuration is anticipated to be in place until mid-2021.
