The No. 18 Texas A&M men's golf team will look to make it back-to-back championships at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai'i this week. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played Thursday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Wailua Golf Course (par 726,991 yards) in Lihue, Kaua'i. The 20-team field will play 18 holes per day beginning at 12 p.m. CT each day. A&M won the event last season, previously claiming the 2009 championship as well. An Aggie has been crowned individual champion on four occasions.
"We love this tournament," said head coach J.T. Higgins. "It is a great week of practice in tropical weather and the course has always set up well for us. We've looked good in practice, have a great strategy in place to attack the course and I know the boys are excited to compete again."
Senior Chandler Phillips is chasing his third straight Burns Intercollegiate individual championship this week. Phillips set a school record in the team's spring opener, shooing a school record 19-under to extend his program-best career tournament win total to seven with a commanding victory at the Arizona Intercollegiate. The Huntsville, Texas native was recently recognized for his outstanding play, being named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List.
Rounding out the Aggie contingency at the Burns Intercollegiate will be juniors Brandon Smith and Dan Erickson, sophomore Walker Lee and freshman Sam Bennett. Additionally, junior Josh Gliege and sophomore Reese Ramsey will compete at individuals.
