Lampasas police are warning residents of a rabid skunk that was found in the area.
According to police, City of Lampasas Animal Control Officer Joe Schwartzer was informed on Thursday of a skunk that tested positive for rabies.
The skunk was found dead in a yard of the 1500 block of Taylor Street in Lampasas.
The skunk was sent for testing to the Texas Department of State Health Services and has tested positive for rabies.
This is the first rabid skunk in the city this year, according to the city.
Lampasas police are now encouraging anyone who sees an animal that appears to be sick or acting strange to call police.
They said you should not attempt to handle wildlife, regardless of whether it appears to be healthy of sick because it could be infectious.
If you are bitten, you should wash the wound with soap and water then seek medical assistance as soon as possible to determine whether treatment is necessary.
If you have any questions, you can call officer Schwartzer at (512) 556-3644.
