McLennan softball beats Blinn, San Jacinto in tournament opener

McLennan Softball picked up two victories at the Scrap Yard in Conroe today.

McLennan came from behind to defeat Blinn 13-11 in the first game of the day with Carla Torres getting the win in the circle.
 
Blinn began the scoring with a Tori Alvarez-Lopez home run in the bottom of the first.
 
The Buccaneers added a run in the second. Maria Garcia singled but was out at second on a fielder’s choice by Bailey Zibelin. Amber Langston then singled to score Zibelin.
 
McLennan got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth as Kaelin Morkisch singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arianna Perales and scored on a single by Kaitlin Richards.
 
Blinn tacked on six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kimber Cortemelia singled and was replaced by pinch runner Kristin Kaiser. Courtney Ogle and Garcia both walked to load the bases. Langston, Mayela Fernandez and Alvarez-Lopez all walked, bringing Kaiser, Ogle and Garcia in to score. With bases still loaded, Sarah Cedillo reached first safely on an error to score Langston. Anna Pisaro then singled to score Fernandez and Alvarez-Lopez.
 
The Highlassies scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Lindy Alexander led off with a double, Rebeca Fajardo singled and Charley Avery was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Morkisch walked to score Alexander, and Perales singled to score Fajardo and Avery. Richards then singled to score Morkisch.
 
Two more Buccaneer runs scored in the bottom of the fifth. Cortemelia and Ogle both singled. Kindle Gault replaced Ogle as a pinch runner. Zibelin grounded into a fielder’s choice, putting Gault out at second. Langston then tripled to score Cortemelia and Zibelin.
 
McLennan tied the game with five runs in the sixth. Alexander singled, Fajardo doubled and Morkisch walked to load the bases. Perales followed with a fielder’s choice to score Alexander and put Fajardo out at third. Richards walked to reload the bases. Sophie Wideman doubled to score Morkisch and Perales, and Olivia Lantigua doubled to score Richards and Wideman.
 
Cortemelia’s home run in the bottom of the sixth gave the lead back to Blinn.
 
The Highlassies scored three runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win. Fajardo led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Avery, and scored on a single by Morkisch. Perales then walked and scored on Richards’ home run.
 
McLennan defeated the San Jacinto Coyotes 12-11 in the second game of the day with Emily Klanika picking up the win.
 
McLennan began the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Morkisch drew a lead-off walk. Perales and Richards followed with back-to-back fielder’s choices to move Morkisch around to third. Morkisch then scored on a ground out by Wideman.
 
San Jacinto scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Madelyn Tannery singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ariana Saenz. Kylee Hatten singled to score Tannery, and Ashley Tran was safe on a McLennan error. Hatten stole home, and Samantha Martinez tripled to score Tran.
 
The Coyotes added six runs in the third. Ashley Ramber singled and scored on a double by Tannery. Tannery then came in to score on the throw. Saenz walked and Hatten was hit by the pitch. Morgan Childs doubled to score Saenz. Martinez and Lillie Grotenhuis were both hit by the pitch, bringing Hatten in to score, and Ramber walked to score Childs. Dominique Garcia also walked, bringing Martinez in to score.
 
The Highlassies added four run in the bottom of the third. Perales singled and scored on a Richards home run. Wideman followed with a solo home run. Brooke Arnold, Daniella Hill, and Avery walked to load the bases. Joani Kohlscheen followed with a sacrifice fly to score Arnold.
 
McLennan scored another three runs in the fourth. Richards and Wideman both singled. Arnold also singled to score Richards. Hill walked to load the bases. Avery singled to score Wideman, and Arnold scored on a fielder’s choice by Destiny Sanchez.
 
San Jacinto tacked on another run in the top of the fifth. Childs singled and Grotenhuis walked. Ramber then singled to score Childs.
 
The Highlassies took the one-run lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Richards walked and scored on a double by Wideman. Eubanks then doubled to score Wideman. Hill and Avery both singled, bringing Eubanks in to score.
 
The Coyotes tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Garcia was safe at first on an error and replaced by pinch runner Lacey Gabaldon. Tannery sacrifice attempt was mishandled putting runners on first and second. Dalilah Bravo also reached on an error to load the bases. Hatten followed with a fielder’s choice, putting Gabaldon out at home. Tannery scored on a sacrifice fly by Marissa Vazquez.
 
McLennan sealed the win with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Eubanks walked and Alexander reached safely on an error. Hill followed with a fielder’s choice, loading the bases. Eubanks then scored on a passed ball.
