School bus shortage impacts CTX districts

With the new year, comes new opportunities. Killeen ISD is looking to hire new school bus drivers.

A growing shortage of bus drivers is impacting districts nationwide, including right here in Central Texas.

The district says the stable economy draws many potential bus drivers, who hold a commercial driver’s license, to other positions leaving many communities in a bind.

Killeen ISD says they are offering competitive packages to attract quality candidates. But it takes a special person to transport our most precious cargo to and from school.

“Somebody who wants to give back to kids. Someone who wants to be apart of an education system. Our bus drivers are the first people our kids see every day when they go to school. The first person to have an imprint on those kids on their way to get a successful education,” said Terry Abbott, Chief Communications Officer for Killeen ISD.

The district offers paid on-the-job training and a $500 solo bonus. Chosen applicants in need of a CDL license will receive guidance from the district and will pay the fee.
