AAA sponsoring Tipsy Tow on New Years Eve

AAA Texas will offer a free service called Tipsy Tow which you can use statewide from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 6 a.m. Jan. 1.

Drivers, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts or passengers of a drinking driver can call for a free tow home of up to 10 miles.

Callers simply request a Tipsy Tow and get the free tow and ride home and you don't have to be a AAA member to use the service, but it only works one-way, one-time for a driver and tow for that driver's vehicle.

AAA has also asked local tow companies to participate in the service.

Matthew Jarma works as a Towing Operator for Temple Towing, one of the local businesses helping AAA this year.

"If you're inebriated, unable to operate your vehicle, call AAA they will dispatch us. We'll tow your vehicle up to 10 miles." Jarma said.

Temple Towing has worked with this program each year and although they only get a handful of calls its better than having a handful of drivers under the influence.

The process takes just under 10 minutes for them to hook your car up, efficiency is the key on nights like New Years Eve.

"Get there and get them loaded and get home quickly, if they're sitting around to long they may think hey I'm okay and they may try and drive themselves home." Jarma said.

Kimberly Brown partakes in the yearly traditions. She has her daughter who is usually her plan A, but she likes the option if needed.

"I have heard it before, that they do offer that service and I would use it if I didn't have my daughter with me because she is my DD." Brown said.

Brown stresses the importance of always having a plan because there are consequences when driving drunk.

"Live in the new year I guess and enjoy the new year and  the celebrations," Brown said.  "A lot of people lose their lives from drinking and driving. Young people lose their lives."

The number people should call to request the "Tipsy Tow" is 1-800-222-4357.
