COLLEGE STATION- No. 23 Texas A&M completed an unbeaten December, defeating UTRGV 84-61 in a women’s basketball game at Reed Arena. The win extends the Aggies’ winning streak to seven games, the program’s longest since winning 11 games to start the 2014-15 season.
Kayla Wells led Texas A&M (11-2) with 21 points, marking her third game with at least 20 points in a four-game span. Ciera Johnson, who was celebrating a birthday Saturday, scored 17 points and added a career-high 17 rebounds for her third double double of the season.
Jada Walton scored a career-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Aaliyah Jackson and Jasmine Williams each added career-highs of seven points.
Texas A&M never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 45-30 lead by halftime. The Aggies outscored the Vaqueros 42-18 in the paint and 17-4 on second-chance points.
UTRGV (6-6) was led by Jameka Dowell with 14 points.
The win means Texas A&M completes December with a 7-0 record, the Aggies’ first unbeaten December since 2008. The Aggies finish non-conference play at 11-2, the programs’ best non-conference record since a 12-2 mark in 2014-15.
A&M’s leading scorer, Chennedy Carter, missed today’s game with the flu.
The Aggies open SEC play on Thursday, January 3, hosting No. 25 South Carolina at 8 p.m.
