BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team dominated the first half and never looked back in an 85-66 victory over Hendrix College Saturday evening in Belton. UMHB improves to 12-1 on the year with the victory while the loss drops the Warriors to 4-7 on the season. The game closed out the two-day, four-team Cru Classic at the Mayborn Campus Center.
The Cru scored the first five points of the game before Hendrix went on an 11-4 run. UMHB responded with a 14-0 burst and scored 27 of the next 32 points to stretch the lead to 20 points at 36-16. The Warriors cut the gap to 44-33 at halftime. UMHB never let Hendrix get closer than nine points in the second half and were able to pull away late for the Cru’s sixth consecutive victory.
Sam Moore had a huge game for UMHB with 33 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. He had a double-double in the first half and poured in 20 second-half points. LaKendric Hyson added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Brian Long scored 15 points for the Cru. UMHB shot 45 percent from the field and went 7-20 from three-point range. UMHB also out rebounded Hendrix 53-33 in the victory.
Preston Smith topped the Warriors with 16 points. Carl Fitch added 10 points. Hendrix shot just 35 percent from the field and was 9-41 from long-range in the loss.
UMHB will return to action with a return to American Southwest Conference play next week. The Cru will play at Belhaven University on Thursday before taking on Louisiana College on Saturday.
