The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to earn an 85-76 win over UT Dallas Saturday afternoon in Richardson. The win improved the Cru to 8-1 on the season and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference play while the Comets dropped to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in league action.
UMHB jumped to a 5-0 lead and held advantage through the first four minutes of play. UT Dallas took a three-point lead with 15:59 left in the first half but UMHB evened the contest at 10. The Comets took advantage from there, leading by as many as 15 points and ending the first half up 46-36. The second half went scoreless until the 17:50 mark when LaKendric Hyson hit a dunk to break the drought. UMHB then used a 12-0 run to take the lead, powered by Demarius Cress with eight points. UT Dallas took the lead one more time with a pair of free throws from Jalen Weber before Sam Moore hit a three-pointer to put the Cru up by two. UMHB did not trail again, limiting the Comets to just six points in the final 5:45 of action.
Sam Moore led the Cru with 33 points while Demarius Cress had 17 points and Byrale Carter had 11. UMHB went 10-24 from the three-point line, led by Moore with six made threes. Moore, Hyson and Aedan Welch led the Cru with five boards each while Moore had a team-high three steals. UMHB shot 46.4 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from the free throw line.
Curtis Allen led the Comets with 17 points while Hans Burwitz added 16. UT Dallas shot 44.4 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and 79.2 percent in foul shots.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, December 15th in a 3 p.m. contest against the University of the Ozarks at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
