The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team earned a 77-69 win over Southwestern University Tuesday evening in Belton to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Alicia Blackwell broke an early scoring drought, draining the first points 1:20 into the contest. UMHB jumped to a 3-0 lead before the Pirates tied it with a three-pointer from Zhazze Brown. UMHB followed that with a 12-7 run to gain a five-point lead and held a 20-15 advantage after the first quarter. The Pirates pulled within two before UMHB went on a 17-0 run, highlighted by Aubrie Elliott with 10 points. The Cru went into halftime with a 41-25 advantage and held a double-digit lead through the third quarter. Southwestern pulled within eight with 2:17 remaining but UMHB held, securing the 77-69 win.

Hannah Holt led the Cru with 21 points while Aubrie Elliott had 11 and Kendall Rollins and Blackwell each added 10. UMHB shot 28.8 percent in the contest, going 6-23 from beyond the arc and draining 83.3 percent of its shots from the free throw line. Madison McCoy led the Cru with seven assists while Blackwell added six. Rollins was the rebound leader for UMHB, going up for eight boards while Holt and Elliott each had seven. Southwestern shot 37.9 percent in the contest, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 61.1 percent from the free throw line.

UMHB returns to action in the American Southwest Conference opener on Thursday, November 29th, hosting East Texas Baptist University in a 5:30 p.m. contest at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
