UMHB Women's Basketball tops Schreiner University

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team pulled away in the final period as the Cru posted a 71-56 victory over Schreiner University Sunday afternoon in Kerrville. UMHB improves to 4-0 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 0-6 on the year.

The Cru scored the first four points of the game and only trailed at one point, as Schreiner took a 7-6 lead with 4:44 left in the opening quarter. UMHB scored the next seven points and led 14-11 after the first period. The Cru led by as many as seven points in the second period before settling for a 35-31 lead at the break. It would be 54-47 after three periods and UMHB limited the Mountaineers to just nine points in the final quarter to pull away for the win.

Hannah Holt led a balanced Cru scoring effort with 13 points and she also had eight rebounds. Rebekah Nolte added 10 points for UMHB and Kandyce Shepard and Alicia Blackwell grabbed 10 rebounds apiece. Eleven different players scored in the victory. The Cru shot 39 percent from the field as a team and had a huge rebounding edge of 59-31 in the contest.

Josline Hernandez topped Schreiner with 15 points and Alyssa Viera added 10 points. The Mountaineers shot just 33 percent from the field as a team, but hit 8-19 from three-point range to stay in the game. Schreiner also forced 20 UMHB turnovers on the day.

The UMHB women will return to action with a 6 pm home game against Southwestern University on Tuesday. The Cru will then open American Southwest Conference play with home games against East Texas Baptist on Thursday and LeTourneau on Saturday.
