Baylor volleyball NCAA tournament bound

Posted

Baylor volleyball finished 19 and 8 overall, 11 and 5 in conference play, and as of Sunday night are one of only two Big 12 Teams competing in the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament.

Baylor volleyball Head coach Ryan McGuyre hosted a campfire worship, Christmas-themed, selection party at his home Sunday night, where the Bears, An at large seed, found out they'll be heading up to Eugene, Oregon, for round one of the NCAA Tournament against Hawaii.

"My heart was beating pretty fast, you know, it's been a long season and it's definitely been a fun season, but just seeing our name come up on the screen was such a joy, and such like uh blessed feeling. I don't know, it's just super fun to experience it with the whole team and have everyone here to support us and love us through it," Shelly Fanning, a middle blocker for the Bears, said.

This will be the bears third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, a first in program history, and Coach McGuyre said the program's past experience in the tournament will boost his team and help them find success on the road.

"Two years ago when we lost to UCLA, in a good way, it really really stung... and wanted to see that momentum carry through. We worked hard to get a seed but didn't take care of that seed you last year, so I think that part still stings a little bit as well. We really know we have to be playing at our best. And champions are their best, when their best is expected. When we're getting the best version of ourselves, we're a very very very good team. We haven't been as consistent in that, but now's a great time to get hot. We've been playing our best volleyball the second half of conference, and it's gonna bleed into December," Head Coach Ryan McGuyre said.

The Bears game against Hawaii is set for Thursday night at 6:30.
