BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team created some separation in the middle two quarters as the Cru posted a 79-64 victory over Oglethorpe University Sunday in Alabama. UMHB is now 2-0 to start the season. The loss drops Oglethorpe to 3-1 on the year.
The Cru led 22-18 after the opening period and stretched it out to a nine-point edge at 40-31 at halftime. UMHB took the lead to double figures at 48-38 on two Alicia Blackwell free throws with 4:43 left in the third quarter and built a 57-42 advantage as Aubrie Elliott buried a jumper to end that period. The Stormy Petrels never got closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Cru coasted to the victory.
Blackwell led UMHB with 18 points and she also had eight rebounds and four assists. Hannah Holt chipped in 17 points and eight boards and Kendall Rollins had 12 points. Kandyce Shepard pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to top the Cru. UMHB shot 45 percent from the field as a team and out rebounded Oglethorpe 52-40 in the game.
Savannah LeGate poured in a game-high 24 points to lead the Stormy Petrels and she also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots. Nikki Reed scored 13 points and Lauren Ransom had 10 rebounds as Oglethorpe shot just 35 percent from the field in the loss.
Blackwell and Holt were both named to the All-Tournament Team for UMHB. The Cru women will now return home for the 2018-19 home opener against Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday at 6 pm.
