Texas A&M was impressive on the first day of the ITA Division I Women’s Texas Regional Championships, going a combined 10-1 in doubles and singles today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

“It was a very productive day for the Aggies,” Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. “We played some very good tennis, and thus it was a nice start to the tournament. One of our challenges to the team was to be mentally tough throughout the five-day event that entails very long days, and I feel that we definitely did a great job in that department on Day 1.”

A&M went 7-1 in singles, with all seven victories coming in straight sets. Aggie sophomore Dorthea Faa-Hviding won two matches to advance to the round of 32. Sophomores Tatiana Makarova and Riley McQuaid, along with freshmen Katya Townsend and Jayci Goldsmith all had first-round byes and won their second-round matches to also advance to the round of 32, which gets underway Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Sophomore Iulia Ivascu opened the tournament with a straight-set win in the round of 128 but suffered a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 setback in the round of 64 for A&M’s only loss of the day.

The Aggies also advanced all three doubles teams to the round of 16 after going 3-0 today.

The second day of the tournament gets underway Friday at 8:45 a.m., followed by singles at 9:30 a.m.
