A sloppy first half gave way to fourth quarter heroics as the Baylor Bears downed Kansas State 37-34.
Alex Barnes for Kansas State started the scoring with a 50 plus yard touchdown run, but the Baylor defense would buckle down after that.
Huge sacks from James Lynch and B.J. Thompson kept the game close. The Bears offense converted two field goals and a Charlier Brewer quarterback keeper for a touchdown gave Baylor the lead but not for long.
Barnes would convert another long score for the Wildcats to give them back the lead. Baylor special teams would struggle missing two field goals and an extra point to go into the half trailing 14-12.
Baylor came out firing in the second half with a quick touchdown to Jalen Hurd before following it up with a two point conversion pass to Chris Platt.
Special teams continued to be a plague for the Bears with Connor Martin missing his third of the game in the third quarter.
Barnes was also a thorn in Baylor’s side as he scored his third big play touchdown in the fourth, but the Bears blocked the PAT to make it 20-20.
K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson broke the tie with a 30+ yard scamper for a score to make it 27-20.
Denzel Mims came to the rescue with a monster catch between two defenders on a ball from Brewer and the game was tied again.
Freshman Christian Morgan picked off K-State’s Thompson to give Baylor another shot on offense.
The Bears turned to a freshman again as running back Squirrel Williams avoided three tackles for a touchdown and Baylor lead.
But, again the cats would tie things up.
Baylor got a last minute drive, forcing the ball inside the Kansas State 10 yard line. Martin redeemed himself with a blast through the goalposts for a 37-34 Baylor lead.
The defense closed it out getting the win. Baylor travels to Texas next week
