Fairfield's unbeaten Eagles will take on Lorena's undefeated Leopards Friday night and Eagle head coach John Bachtel already knows how things will play out.
"[Lorena head coach] Ray [Biles] does a super job over there. His kids always play hard. Every time we play it's usually a 3 point or 7 point game. hen you play Lorena you better bring your lunch pail to the game."
If a workman brings a lunch pail, Fairfield brings the whole cooler. The Eagles are averaging more than 40 points per game to the Leopard's 30+. Fairfield's defense is also senior laden and has no problem getting physical with another team.
Despite all that being true, the Eagles have built a narrative to take them into Friday night.
"We've always been the underdog, even when we're not the underdog. Cause people always expect us to throw in the towel at some point," Explained senior linebacker Jashaughn Hatcher, "I don't know why, but they do. We always have to prove to people that Fairfield Eagles, that name means something."
That's how this works, players build a narrative, use it for motivation, and try to capitalize on the momentum.
We'll see if that works out Friday night at 7:30 in Lorena.
