The Texas A&M women’s golf team took Wisconsin to the final hole of the match, but ultimately fell, 3-2, at the East and West Match Play Challenge Tuesday at the Radrick Farms Golf Club.
Winning points for the Aggies were sophomore Elizabeth Caldarelli and junior Courtney Dow. Caldarelli won four of her first five holes to take a commanding 4 up lead, one she would never relinquish over the Badgers’ Alyssa Gromala, winning 3 and 2. Dow won her last two holes defeat Wisconsin’s Aya Johnson 3 and 1, birdieing the 165-yard par 3 7th then parring the 320-yard par 4 8th.
With the match tied at 2-2, A&M’s Brooke Tyree and Wisconsin’s Gabrielle Tomeo were all square through 17 holes on the par 72 / 6,292-yard course. Tyree stuck her approach to seven feet of the hole, but Tomeo snaked in a 25-foot putt to clinch the point and the match for the Badgers.
Competing as an individual, Velasco won the consolation final with a 5 and 3 win over Bobbi Stricker of Wisconsin, polishing off her victory with a birdie on the 398-yard par 4 6th hole.
The Aggies return to action September 28-30 at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla.
