The Waco Fire Department rescued a trapped dog from a 30-feet deep abandoned well after 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Firefighters from a technical rescue station pulled her out from the well in the 1800 block of N. 6th.

Waco Fire Suppression Lieutenant Billy Eary said the old well had a lid on it.

"Apparently the lid had deteriorated and the kids said they walk through that lot all the time going to their friend's house. Luckily it wasn't them we had to rescue," Eary said.

However, he said it was still important for them to rescue the 1-year-old dog, Hazel.

"Our job is to save jobs and property. It doesn't matter what life it is. Our job is to help the citizens in any way we can," Eary said.

Some members of the department had trained on rescues similar to that one recently.

"It doesn't happen very often but we had just trained several scenarios like this last week and our other crew that was with us went through a lot of this morning," Eary said.

Hazel didn't sustain any injuries but it was scared after the situation.
