The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team finished the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational with a 3-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer and a 3-2 win over California Lutheran Saturday in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The wins improved the Cru to 5-1 on the season.
UMHB earned a 25-14, 25-14, 25-18 win over the Sagehens to open the day. Miranda Klein led the Cru with nine kills while Kayla Janikula, Sarah Paolini and Corinne Novak each added eight. UMHB totaled 42 kills on 86 attacks. Cory Jo Martin anchored the offense with 26 assists while Klein added 11. Jenna Gillean was the defensive leader with 10 digs with Haleigh Evans adding nine. Janikula and Klein both led defensive efforts at the net with five blocks.
The Cru followed that with a 3-2 win over tournament-host California Lutheran. UMHB and the Regals traded consecutive sets with the Cru earning 25-20 and 25-23 wins in the first and third sets while California Lutheran took the second and the fourth sets 25-23, 25-21. UMHB secured the 3-2 win with a 15-8 win in the fifth set. Novak led the Cru with 19 kills while Gillean added 18 and Klein had 14. UMHB hit .235 in the match, slamming 68 kills on 187 attacks. Martin was the leader in assists with 44 while Klein added 18. Haleigh Evans led UMHB’s defensive efforts with 28 digs, followed by Martin with 17 and Gillean with 16. UMHB totaled 68 kills, 66 assists and 92 digs while the Regals had 63 kills, 57 assists and 85 digs.
UMHB returns to action on Friday, September 14th in a 6 p.m. match against Concordia University Texas in Austin.
