Baylor starting quarterback Charlie Brewer will be full speed this week after being ruled out midway through the ACU game with a back injury.

"Yeah, I talked to Charlie about it and [the medical staff] actually took his helmet away from him because he wanted to go back in," said head coach Matt Rhule on Monday.

"He even said he didn't know what happened just that he felt something happen, but now he's good to go."

As for other injury updates, Rhule confirmed OT John Malin has a significant knee injury and will be unavailable. Offensive linemen Jake Fruhmorgen and Johncarlo Valentin are also dealing with injuries, but Rhule said they could be available this week.

Rhule went on to applaud his wide receiver corps for their blocking against Abilene Christian as well as their poise in the fourth quarter cheering on their teammates.

"Jalen Hurd and Chris Platt put on as good a blocking performance downfield as I've seen. . . Some of our best players weren't 'too cool' to celebrate Saturday. Jamycal Hasty and Hurd were up screaming for their teammates to get a shutout in the fourth quarter."

The head Bear said he was proud of that fourth quarter shutout, but says the defense still has a long way to go.

"They only averaged 80 yards on the ground per game last year and they had over 200 on us. We had too many missed tackles on defense. We have too many kids diving."

UTSA will use a similar varied defensive scheme to attack Baylor that ACU used, but Rhule said week one should have helped them prepare for that.

"I mean, we saw bear front, 4-3, they blitzed us from all over and Sam Tecklenburg did a great job, all our guys did a great job, of working and making sure we were prepared for that. We'll see a lot more of that this week."

Baylor is scheduled to play UTSA in the Alamodome Saturday night at 6.
