2017 saw the Troy Trojans finish 3-7, but with the losses came experience for a roster that was mostly freshmen and sophomores.
Head coach Ronnie Porter says the team understands what's expected of them and what it takes to compete in their district.
Troy's experience is centered on the offensive line and running back Zach Hrbacek. The reigning offensive newcomer of the year knows that in his sophomore season he has to have a bigger role.
"I have to step up and be a leader. Just pushing the underclassmen, the freshmen lower than me, just to be better and not give up on themselves. No excuses. That's the motto this year."
Coach Porter says keeping his roster engaged is a task for his staff.
"It's a delicate balance of keeping them confident and keeping the mentality and working hard. Working harder to where it makes it difficult for people to take things away from you."
Troy will show how successful their balancing act has been as they play Salado on the road week one.
