Belton shortstop Avery Drake will play in the Texas Girls Coaches' Association Softball All-Star game Wednesday, but she says when head coach Matt Blackburn told her the news it was a bit of a lackluster phone call.
"I actually seemed more excited than he was," shared Drake with a laugh, "But I think once he heard me being excited he definitely got excited too."
And why shouldn't there be excitement? Drake is the first player in program history to make the game.
"That's something I'm very proud of."
After the season, coaches nominate players from their teams they think are up to snuff. From there, a regional representative selects the top players and takes them to a six person selection committee who picks 28 players (14 for each team) from the more than 120 name list.
"Now, getting to play with the best [players in the state] I'm super excited and curious to see how it all plays out."
Drake will take the field with her Red Team teammates Wednesday night in Arlington.
