A woman was arrested after police said she shot a woman in the chest earlier this week.

Police said a woman is alert after being shot in the chest on Thursday morning in Killeen.

Police said it is too early to know exactly what happened. They were alerted to the situation by Metroplex Hospital.

"A female arrived there suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, and she was immediately airlifted to Baylor Scott and White," Ofelia Miramontez with the Killeen Police Department said.

Luckily, the victim was alert and able to tell medical personnel the shooting took place in the 800 block of Sissom Road.

On Saturday, Killeen police said that Nazeema Augustin, 38, was arrested on June 1 and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.

"Officers were out here within three minutes because we had officers out in this area, and they immediately dispatched like three or four units out to this area," Miramontez added.

Several neighbors came out to the scene while police were investigating.

"I heard this loud pop, pop and I thought at first it was a transformer blowing like electricity going out or something," Margie Mock, a neighbor, said.

But after finding out it was actually gunshots, they said they aren't shocked this happened in their neighborhood.

"This is the neighborhood that it always happens," Mock added.

"We hear gunshots all times of the day and night. It's not the safest neighborhood. It's sad because my family has lived in the home that we live in since '76," Michelle Parker, a neighbor, said.

Parker said she constantly keeps her windows and doors locked.

"I'm happy that I have burglar bars on my house, so they can't get in unless they rip the door off the hinges," Parker added.

The woman has nonlife-threatening injuries and is currently stable.

Augustin was arraigned and will be transported to the Bell County Jail. Her bond will be set at $100,000.
