Officer involved shooting in Bell County on 195
A suspect has been identified after a chase and an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday. The suspect was also charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to a 2016 arrest affidavit.
Sheriff Robert Chody tweeted that Williamson County Sheriff's Office was working the scene in Bell County. The scene was off Mountain Creek Road and Hwy 195.
According to officials, a welfare check was underway at 1:11 p.m. Deputies located a vehicle west of Florence area. When deputies tried to talk to the person in the vehicle, the suspect fled the scene and led deputies on a chase.
Speeds from the chase reached over 110 miles per hour. The suspect, identified as Alva Gwinn, 39, entered a private property and got out of the car, fleeing on foot.
Officials say Gwinn had a weapon on him and fired at least one shot at a Williamson County Sheriff's deputy. At least one deputy returned fire.
Gwinn died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The affidavit released Monday said that Gwinn had sexually assaulted a girl in 2012 when the girl was 13-years-old.
The trial was expected to start on Nov. 6 in Bell County.
Gwinn was a master sergeant on Fort Hood. He had entered active-duty in 1999. He was deployed in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2013.
The Texas Rangers are taking over the investigation.
