John Hoagland was one of ten soldiers that died when his ship, the USS John McCain, collided with an oil tanker last month near Singapore.
Hoagland died Aug. 21 and had been working on the McCain since last October.
The sailor graduated from Shoemaker High School in 2015 and will be returning to Central Texas Tuesday for his burial on Thursday. Hoagland was promoted to second class the morning of his funeral. He was set to be promoted the morning of the accident.
"John embodied the spirit of what we want all good students to do. John was very active in school... every time General Shoemaker and his wife came to the school he actually escorted them around the school," Col. (Ret.) Tom Clady, the Senior Army Instructor at Shoemaker High School, said.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the John Henry Hoagland, III Memorial Scholarship. You can donate by clicking here or calling the Killeen ISD Education Foundation at 254-336-0181. Hoagland will be buried in the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
