The Mexia Police Department Chief of Police retired Tuesday night.

At a special city council meeting, the council approved Chief Richard Hawthorne's retirement.

Hawthorne had been on sick leave for several months. He served as a peace officer for the Mexia Police Department and the Mexia ISD Police Department for 35 years. He was the Chief of Police for Mexia PD for 15 1/2 years.

The city did not discuss replace Hawthorne at the meeting Tuesday night, but the mayor said that would be a discussion in the near future.
