Former Killeen Fire Chief J.D. Gardner passed away Thursday, City of Killeen spokesperson Hilary Shine confirmed Saturday.
Gardner stepped down from the Killeen Fire Department in May 2016 to focus on his health.
He had been with the department since 2006.
