A Baylor student was killed Thursday night after police said a speeding car hit the student while he was riding his bike.

It happened shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday in the 3100 block of Franklin Avenue.

Waco Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Patrick Swanton identified the student as 19-year-old David Grotberg from Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Swanton said Grotberg and his girlfriend were riding their bikes going eastbound on Franklin Avenue when a speeding car hit Grotberg. The car left the scene and continued traveling eastbound on Franklin Avenue.

Grotberg was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Hillcrest, where he was pronounced dead. His girlfriend, also a Baylor student, wasn't hurt.

In a statement released by the university, Baylor said that Grotberg was "involved in the Honors College as a member of the Honors Residential College community and participated in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core...David played trumpet as a member of the Baylor Golden Wave Marching Band."

Police did not provide a description of the car.
