SAN SABA, Texas — A Brownwood teen drowned on Sunday afternoon at Mill Pond Park in San Saba.
The incident happened just before 6 p.m.
Police said 17-year-old D'Avion Wasson was trying to cross the 60-yard-pond. When he reached halfway, he went underwater and never came back up.
Other swimmers nearby eventually found him and brought him to shore, but he was unresponsive.
Paramedics attempted to give the boy CPR and took him to a hospital in Lampasas where he was pronounced dead.
“D’Avion was a senior and starting guard on the Brownwood Lion Basketball team,” Brownwood principal Mitch Moore said. “The BHS family is hurting along with D’Avion’s family today because we have lost a friend, classmate, and teammate. D’Avion was a competitor on the court and we will honor him by striving for excellence in all that we do as a staff and student body.”
