WACO, Texas (AP) - A large piece of a cliff above Lake Whitney that was already marred by a giant crack in the limestone has crashed into the lake below during a severe storm.
Hill County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Hemrick says that because of the storm, no one was on the lake Sunday evening when it fell.
Officials had already been monitoring the cliff, which was teetering along a 150-foot-long crack. In March the crack widened to 6 feet across in some areas.
The area, which lines the back of homes, suffered from erosion that caught media attention last summer. As the cliff face began to collapse, a house was left dangling on the edge. That house was set on fire it before it could fall into the lake.
