Trio of Aggies make NCAA Singles field

COLLEGE STATION, TX — A pair of singles student-athletes and one doubles team were selected to represent Texas A&M tennis at the 2019 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, the NCAA announce Tuesday afternoon. Carlos Aguilar and Hady Habib earned entrance to the singles bracket while Aguilar and Barnaby Smith earned a national seed in the doubles field.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19. The University of Central Florida and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission are serving as hosts for the championships.

Aguilar and Habib are making their first appearance in the singles championships. Aguilar, a La Paz, Bolivia native, played No. 1 singles for nearly every match this season as he claimed a team-best nine ranked wins and earned All-SEC first team honors. Habib garnered All-SEC honors for the second time, the sophomore was on the All-Freshman team in 2017. The Houston, Texas native turned in a 14-6 dual mark this spring including an 8-4 mark against league foes.

Aguilar and Smith are ranked No. 7 after going 11-6 and topping four ranked teams this spring. As a national seed, the duo earned All-American honors to mark the seventh straight season that A&M has produced an All-American Doubles team. The honor is the second-straight for Aguilar and first for Smith.

The Mitchell Tennis Center will play host to the 2019 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship first round matches slated for Friday, May 3. The Maroon and White will take on A&M-Corpus Christi in the NCAA opening round, while Oklahoma and Arizona compete in the other first round contest.
