BELTON, TEXAS — It has been a rough start to the season for the Cru, but they still find themselves 2-0.
At this point last year, UMHB was also 2-0. But, they were averaging a 73 point margin of victory.
This year, that margin is much slimmer. Through two games, the Cru have only won their two games by an average of 23 points.
For a team with sky-high expectations, the burden of blowouts is firmly on the shoulders of a young and inexperienced group. Head Coach Pete Fredenburg admitted the locker room has had a disappointed air around it, as a result of the closer finishes.
But, there is a light up ahead.
Fredenburg announced senior quarterback Jase Hammack is set to return to practice Tuesday, and there is a chance he could see game action as early as this weekend.
In the meantime, the coaching staff is working to build confidence in a young team with a lot to prove.
"We don't want to ever treat a win like a loss," Fredenburg said. "I always tell guys first thing, 'Congratulations. How do you feel?' and they say, 'well, we didn't play as well as we should have.' But, they enjoy the win and they celebrate the win. I mean, we are 2-0. There's gonna be some struggles. We can attest to that. We've already had two of em. And it's not gonna change overnight. But, we've got to do enough positive things and grow enough to continue to get W's."
The Cru return to play Saturday, when they take on Howard Payne University at Crusader Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:00 P.M.
