WACO, TX — No. 6 Baylor equestrian will open its 2019-20 campaign with a road meet at No. 5 SMU Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

“We are definitely excited to get this season started tomorrow at SMU,” head coach Casie Maxwell said. “Practices have been going really well, and the team is really looking forward to getting into the competition arena. We have a good mix of veteran and new riders, so we’re looking forward to seeing who will really step up on meet day.”

BU is 2-0 all-time in season openers under third-year head coach Casie Maxwell. The Bears open their season on the road for the first time since the 2016-17 opener where BU dropped a 12-6 loss at South Carolina.

Under Maxwell, the Bears have outscored their opponents 32-4 in season openers, dominating West Texas A&M and Delaware State in the previous two season openers under Maxwell.

BU leads the all-time series, 7-1, but the Bears dropped the most recent meeting on Oct. 14, 2017. Baylor and SMU went toe-to-toe and ended in a 10-10 tie, but the Mustangs won the tiebreaker, 1566-1491.5 in Dallas.

The Bears return three NCEA All-Americans, three Big 12 Riders of the Year and five All-Big 12 honorees to the 2019-20 season. BU is coming off a 9-5 overall record and the program’s fourth Big 12 title a season ago and an NCEA quarterfinal team appearance.

There will be live scoring for Friday’s contest, and the link is on the Baylor equestrian schedule page at BaylorBears.com.
