WACO, TX — Lady Bears' forward Lauren Cox was the keynote speaker for the JDRF One Party 2019 Wednesday night.

The National Champion and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year partnered with the global organization that funds Type 1 Diabetes research to show that Type 1 doesn't define who you are and stop you from reaching your goals.

"Diabetes doesn't have to define you. You control it, it doesn't control you," Cox said.

Cox was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of seven and said at the time, she didn't have anyone to look up to with her same condition.

That's what drives her to speak at events like these that help fund research while building relationships with other kids with Type 1.

"Ever since I was diagnosed up until my freshman year at Baylor I was kind of embarrassed by it. I didn't want anybody to see me taking out my meter, testing my blood sugar, taking insulin. I got to Baylor and Coach Mulkey was kind of that person that kind of made me show it to the world and use it as my platform," Cox added. "It's a huge part of my life, it's not going away. We have events like this to potentially find a cure and get better technology to help us out. It's a huge part of my life and really important to me."
