Whether you’ve been let go or you’re hours have been cut, most Texans have experienced a hard time financially during this pandemic.
However, in this new age of technology, making extra money is as easy as picking up someone’s food in the drive-thru at McDonald’s.
With most Central Texas counties under a shelter in place order, food delivery services like Doordash and Favor have seen a spike in usage. These services offer delivery from most restaurants in their community, all you have to do is open the app to get all your favorite food delivered straight to your door. These businesses are constantly hiring and training their employees to pick up and deliver food to their customers.
With the pandemic currently going on, these businesses have adapted the way their runners operate when delivering your food. Most food delivery services now exclusively offer a contact-free delivery where the runner places the food at your door, texts you that your order has arrived, and then you pick it up once the runner leaves.
Food delivery service Doordash says they are, “shipping more than 1 million sets of free hand sanitizer and gloves to Dashers and are providing guidance to help them stay healthy.” They have also set up a fund to provide, “up to two weeks of financial assistance for eligible Dashers in the United States (including Puerto Rico), Australia, and Canada who are quarantined or diagnosed with COVID-19.”
Another popular food delivery service Favor also started the COVID-19 Runner Relief Program that allows, “runners who are diagnosed or put under self-quarantine by a public health agency or medical professional may be eligible to receive financial assistance for up to four weeks.”
With the shelter in place order from Gov. Greg Abbott, these types of food delivery have experienced a spike in calls and have aimed to support local restaurants by offering free delivery and encouraging people to shop from local businesses.
