LAMPASAS, TX — The Lampasas Country Kitchen has been serving small town Lampasas residents and passersby for 44 years.
Known to the locals to go for a hot cup of coffee and good conversation, it's no surprise they've been able to keep some business but it has slowed the past month.
"We've seen 90% less revenue than before, that's pretty cut and dry," owner, Scott McLeain said.
Initiating drive-thru and to-go services, for the time being, McLeain is thrilled he's opening up the doors for sit down once again. Orders by Governor Abbott say restaurants can serve at a 25% capacity. Since Lampasas County has less than 5 confirmed Covid-19 cases he gets to have a bit more come in and enjoy a hot meal.
"We're at 50% capacity, but at the same time we haven't overstretched it," McLeain said.
Local and regular Steve Forsythe is happy to come back and dine-in.
"If they were ever closed down they would be really missed in the community," Forsythe said.
Thankfully, their doors didn't have to close thanks to customers like Forsythe. Working harder than ever before McLeain and his staff's hard work has been noticed.
"It's just a good place to go and shows local support. I think he's done a great job trying to keep the place open, supporting his employees," Forsythe said.
One thing you'll notice if you visit the Country Kitchen is their decorations, many knick-knacks are placed throughout the restaurant from far and wide.
"My dad started this restaurant in 1976 and he was a junk collector," McLeain said.
It started a trend and many customers came in to place their own treasured finds on the wall or on a shelf.
Moments like that are what makes McLeain excited to invite customers back into his restaurant.
"It's so good seeing our friends, neighbors coming in and smiling, so maybe it'll get back as things loosen up and it'll be great again," McLeain said.
