WACO— Evin Wolske has called Central Texas home his entire life.
He's been fishing his entire life, too, but nothing prepared the 20-year-old TSTC student for what he and a buddy nabbed last month on the Brazos River.
"I thought it might be a log. We got it up to our boat after about 30 minutes of fighting," said Wolske.
It was no log. Instead, they were face-to-face with massive alligator gar measuring close to seven feet.
“Sure enough, we put the lasso through the rod and it was go time. We went to the bank and started taking pictures,” Wolske said with a laugh.
Canyon Aguirre saw it all firsthand. He couldn't believe the monster they were able to haul in near Baylor.
"It took it out of me. It was all I could do. I couldn’t put a weight on it, maybe 200 lbs," said Aguirre.
Ironically, he pulled in a big gar of his own only a half-hour earlier.
Both men released their catches, so others can get a chance to reel in a "big one" on the Brazos.
"I figured people would say it was photo shopped," said Wolske.
The Brazos River Authority was first to post the photo to its Facebook page, a post which now has nearly 1,000 shares.
