HILL COUNTY, TEXAS — The Hill County Sheriff's Office announced with sorrow that Sgt. Jeff Winningham has died after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
The Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Winningham fought valiantly against the cancer that took him away from his friends and family much too soon.
"We will miss his infectious smile and great sense of humor, but he will always be in our hearts," said the department in a post.
The Sheriff's Office asks that everyone keep the family of Sgt. Winningham in their thoughts and prayers at this time.
In June, his family announced that his cancer had returned,"very aggressive in nature and not responsive to any treatment they tried."
At that point, Winningham was no longer able to work full time and the family was waiting on benefits that were expected to take several months to come in, putting the family in a difficult situation.
Sgt. Winningham served his community for over 20 years, according to a post by his family.
More information will be provided on funeral services for Sgt. Winningham once they are announced.
