COPPERAS COVE, TX — A student at Copperas Cove High School is being given a full-ride scholarship to Rice University in Houston.

Seventeen-year-old Copperas Cove senior Isabella Childers has been awarded the National Merit Scholarship.

She was just one of about 15,000 finalists across the nation, but she made it through the process and will now be attending Rice University in Houston

Childers says she is humbled by the experience, but she does have message for the community and her fellow students.

“I think the most important thing that people can do is take advantage of every opportunity given to them. Even if it’s something you don’t think you’re interested in, try it, explore. Especially while you’re young because you might not get these opportunities later on,” she said.

Childers is student council president and senior class officer secretary as well as debate captain and captain of the UIL Academic Ready Writing and Copy-Editing teams.

She is also well on her way to being this year's valedictorian of Copperas Cove High School.
