The Census Bureau is only a few months away from collecting data for the 2020 Census, and they are calling on the country for help.
The bureau is looking to hire more than 500,000 people across the country, 7,500 of which will come from Central Texas.
"The challenge that we have is that the number of applicants that we normally need are a lot more than that, and we only have about 5,500 applicants in the system today, so we have a long way to go,” said Area Regional Census Manager Jerome Garza.
Since 1790, the census has been responsible for a lot of things, including helping the federal government decide how to distribute more nearly 700 billion dollars across the country.
The census also decides how many representatives a state will have in the House of Representatives and helps plan for things like roads, school, emergency personnel and hospitals.
The Census Bureau is looking to fill several different positions, including field workers and more than 60 people at the census office in Waco.
Salaries for the positions can reach up to $25 an hour. For example, those looking to work in the field in Bell or McLennan County will start at $16.50 while those wanting to work in Brazos County will start at $15.50.
