BRYAN, TX — A Bryan Independent School District student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis on Friday, the Brazos County Health District said.

Test results for the Bryan ISD Disciplinary Alternative Educational Program student show they contracted Neisseria meningitidis.

The school district and health district are working together to investigate the disease occurrence and preventative treatment of those who may have been exposed to the student.

The health district said meningitis caused by N. meningitidis is contagious and that the bacteria are spread through close contact through the exchange of respiratory and fluids from the mouth.

Those who qualify as close contacts of a person who was infected by N. meningitidis should receive antibiotics to prevent the spread of the disease.

Common symptoms include fever, headache and a stiff neck. Other symptoms may include rash, nausea, vomiting, discomfort-looking into bright lights, confusion and sleepiness.
