WACO, TX — While all of February is recognized as Spay/Neuter Month, Feb. 26 is World Spay Day.
The Animal Birth Control Clinic in Waco does its part to serve the community by offering these services at a low cost, so everyone can take better care of their pet.
For cats, spay and neuter services cost less than $40. For a dog, it costs less than $60.
Carrie Kuehl is the executive director of the Animal Birth Control Clinic. She said their costs are about a third of what a full-service clinic would charge.
"Donors and revenue from the nonsurgical things that we do in the clinic help to make our spay/neuter surgery so affordable," Kuehl said. "We do an average of 41 to 46 a day so this year we'll do between 11,000 and 12,000 surgeries."
Kuehl said a spayed or neutered pet lives a happier and healthier life. After the procedure, your pet is usually better-behaved, more affectionate, calm and trainable.
By reducing reproductive hormones, your pet is less likely to have the behaviors which can lead to bites. Their desire to roam off is also reduced.
These services also help control population growth.
"The additional benefit is not having too many dogs or cats born in our community," Kuehl said. "Our shelters are overburdened, so we really encourage it for the benefits that way too."
