VALLEY MILLS, TX — UPDATE: After this story aired, the couple says they have received many calls from the community offering help.

Stranded out in the country, Larry Hamby and his wife, Christy Wilson are scared for their future.

The elderly couple bought a car last year they can no longer drive until it gets repaired, which is something they can't afford.

"I can’t afford to lose the car because that’s the only way to get back-and-forth to the doctor,“ said Hamby.

Hamby and Wilson explained they have to travel to the hospital several times a month. Hamby is finally in remission after a seven-year battle with bladder cancer, but now doctors have found other health concerns and they need to be able to drive to get treatment.

They called their dealership who told them to take the car to a mechanic, something the couple who lives on social security and disability cannot afford. They said they then called the state, who advised they get a lawyer, which is also something they can't do.

“We don’t normally ask for help but we need to have the car fixed,“ said Wilson.

The couple has been told the car needs its lifters fixed, which will make it safe to drive again.

“When you start it up it goes dut dut dut dut,” said Christy.
