WACO, TX — For the September 19 edition of Central Texas Living Ann Harder spoke with Dr. Brian Becker, chief medical officer of Ascension Providence and Dr. Timothy Ball, cardiologist at Ascension Providence and Waco Cardiology Associates.
According to the American Heart Association, at least 2.7 million Americans are living with Atrial Fibrillation, or AFib. However, many people who have AFib are not getting the treatment they need. September is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month and doctors are reminding people of the importance of taking care of your heart.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm problem in the U.S. It is an irregular heart beat that can lead to stroke or heart failure if not treated appropriately. The first step in treatment is diagnosis, through an in-depth examination from a physician. AFib can be difficult to diagnose as it often comes and goes early in the disease.
