MICHOCAN, MEXICO — A boy in Mexico decided to leave his puppy at a shelter to shield it from his abusive father.

Andres, a 12-year-old from Michocan, Mexico, dropped his pit bull off at a shelter with a note earlier this month.

The letter said the boy’s father was abusive and kicked the dog hard enough to injure it.

Andres even left a toy for the dog so it wouldn’t forget him.

The rescue group posted the heartbreaking story on Facebook, which led to hundreds of adoption requests.

The dog, named Rene, was taken to the hospital by the shelter, and is on his way to a healthy recovery.
