Texas Senator-elect Roland Gutierrez files bill to legalize marijuana in Texas

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Texas Senator-elect Roland Gutierrez, of San Antonio, filed a bill to legalize marijuana and medical marijuana in the state of Texas, according to News4SA.

The SB 140 bill, filed on November 9, is "relating to the regulation of the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, sale, testing, possession, and use of cannabis and cannabis products."

According to online records, the bill also involves "authorizing the imposition of taxes and fees; requiring an occupational license; creating a criminal offense; to border security enhancement projects and the creation of a fund to pay for those projects; to authorizing the possession, use, cultivation, distribution, transportation, and delivery of medical cannabis and the licensing of medical cannabis dispensing organizations."

In a statement to News4SA, Gutierrez says cannabis could provide the state with an economic opportunity worth $3.2 billion.
