AUSTIN, TX — South By Southwest will be deferring wristband purchases to 2021 after canceling the festival over coronavirus concerns.

Emails to SXSW attendees said "We are devastated to share this news with you. “The show must go on” is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation. In addition to the online and potentially rescheduled events mentioned above, 2020 Film Festival wristband purchases will be deferred to 2021. We will be in touch soon with a system for deferral and FAQ."

SXSW says you don't need to take immediate action regarding your 2020 wristband. It will remain in their system.

Any immediate questions can be sent to reg@sxsw.com.

SXSW says if you have booked a hotel through SXSW Housing & Travel, your reservation will not be automatically canceled. To change or cancel your reservation please follow the instructions in your SXSW Hotel Reservation Confirmation email.

The email ends by saying "We will continue to work hard to bring you the unique events you love. Though it’s true that our March 2020 event will no longer take place in the way that we intended, we continue to strive toward our purpose - helping creative people achieve their goals."

The festival issued a statement yesterday saying they are devastated to share the cancellation news. The group announced they are now working through the ramifications of this "unprecedented situation."
