'Lonesome Dove' screenwriter Bill Wittliff dies at 79

TEXAS — A "Texas State Hero" has passed away.

Popular screenwriter Dr. Bill Wittliff passed away on Sunday at the age of 79.

Wittliff authored screenplays for the TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove" and "The Perfect Storm."

Texas State University announced Wittliff's death on Monday. Wittliff, along with his wife Dr. Sally Wittliff, founded the Wittliff Collections. The collection is a special collections research archive, library and exhibition gallery.

In a statement from the university, "The Wittliff includes more than 500 special collections in literature, photography, music, and film, and attracts visitors, researchers, and lifelong learners from around the globe. It stands as a tribute to Bill’s legacy. Bill was a gifted writer, filmmaker, photographer, artist, and visionary. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, but particularly to our students."

Wittliff was a native Texan and from the Blanco area.
