HOUSTON, TX — Deputies in Houston are leaving fake packages on door steps to bait porch pirates.

They're targeting areas being hit by package thieves.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the packages they set out have tracking devices in them which allows deputies to monitor every move the box makes.

A team of deputies then swoops in on the people carrying the box and make the arrest.

Officials say the whole point of doing these operations is to let the public know so maybe the porch pirates think twice before taking anything left at a person's front door.

"It is easy to call amazon or fed ex and say my package was stolen or I never received it and some companies simply sends another package and the police is never notified," said Javier Urena with HCSO.

Mail theft comes with serious jail time. If you are caught, you could face up to five years in prison and fines.
